Junior Naturalist Programs
June 12th through August 28th
The Nature Center has a Junior Naturalist Program every Saturday starting at 10:00am until noon and runs through August. All children programs include a forest nature walk, snacks, and work books. Cost is $3.00 pre child and $2.00 for members of the Friends of the San Jacinto Mountain County Parks.
Please note that Butterfly Daze begins at
9am and ends at 4pm.

Memorial Weekend 29th, 30th and 31 st |
The Idyllwild Nature Center Memorial Weekend Wildflower & Art exhibit May 29th, 30th and 31 st – We will be featuring Author, Artist, Educator & Interpreter John Muir Laws as he leads interpretative nature walks in the forest, Saturday through Monday 10:00am – 12:00pm. (Morning session is a day use fee) For more hands on and up close, join him for an artist approach in his afternoon classes on plants, birds and wildlife. Event Butterfly Daze

Butterfly Daze is Saturday, August 14th beginning at 9:00am. A butterfly pavilion is erected on the grounds where children and adults can go inside and feed the butterflies. At 4:00pm the butterflies are then set free. Other activities during the day include an Arts & Crafts fair with vendors selling lemonade and watermelon. Be sure to mark your calendar and join us for a fun afternoon while learning about the lifecycle of butterflies. You can also sponsor a butterfly for $6.00 and watch it take flight. Microtrek scavenger hunt
|
Children will experience an inside outside all around scavenger hunt discovering and documenting facts or clues along the way of what it means to be a microenvironment, or microhabitat. We will be looking for evidence of wildlife, children will classify, tally and use a microscope to examine their findings. |

Event Tortoises 1:00pm – 3:00pm |
Tortoises with Park Interpreter Supervisor Nancy Wenzel. Nancy will be sharing various kinds of tortoises and turtles that she rehabilitates. Children and adults will get an up close and personal look at these special critters. Crafts for children included. | |

A great opportunity for children to learn basic compass reading skills; map out a trail for the group to follow, and practice their orienteering skills. These are important lessons every child should know; no matter where you are, you’ll know which way you are heading. | |

Some like it wet!

Get up close and possibly wet as we discover the mysteries of watersheds the habitats they create and the beneficial services they provide. Children will create a wetland in a pan. | |

It’s all about the beak!
|
You’ll view the multitudes of mountains birds through the use of binoculars. Children will be introduced to birding and the identification of birds. Start your life list by experiencing Idyllwild’s chickadee, white headed wood peckers, mountain quail, nut hatches and many more forest friends. | |
