The Idyllwild Nature Center Memorial Weekend Wildflower & Art exhibit May 29th, 30th and 31 st – We will be featuring Author, Artist, Educator & Interpreter John Muir Laws as he leads interpretative nature walks in the forest, Saturday through Monday 10:00am – 12:00pm. (Morning session is a day use fee) For more hands on and up close, join him for an artist approach in his afternoon classes on plants, birds and wildlife. Riverside County Parks invites you to join our Wildflower Photo Contest

Wildflowers are in bloom at many of the county’s parks and the Riverside County Regional Park & Open Space District is sponsoring a competition for the best photographs of those flowers or the colorful scenery.

The wildflower photo contest will begin on March 31, 2010 and will continue through May 14. A limit of ten pictures can be submitted via e-mail at promotions {at} riversidecountyparks(.)org or uploaded directly to the site at http://photos.riversidecountyparks.org. Park visitors can submit their best photos of wildflowers in bloom at county parks. All entries will be judged by District staff, and finalists will be posted at www.riversidecountyparks.org so that viewers can vote for the best shots.

Online voting will begin on May 15 and continue through May 23. Five winners selected by online viewers will receive prizes and will have their photos featured on the District’s web site on May 24.

Photos submitted must be the original work of the photographer. Winners will be contacted via e-mail and announced on the website. Galleries of submitted photos will be available on the site after May 14.

As with any outdoor activity, be mindful of vegetation that can cause allergic reactions. For example, a purple wildflower found in burned areas called Turricula parryi, known as the poodle-dog bush, can cause symptoms similar to those caused by poison oak. Acorn Day October 23rd 10:00am – 3:00pm

Archaeologist & Tribal Representative Daniel Mc Carthy will give an historical perspective on the traditional harvesting and usage of the acorns. Through hands on activities we will provide educational and fun learning experiences by sorting, grinding, leaching, the acorns. Participants will have the opportunity to sample ‘Wiwish’ the Cahuilla’s traditional acorn meal, and muffins.

Enjoy the Native games, activities, crafts and music offered throughout the day.

1:00pm Special showing of Cahuilla Elder, Katherine Siva Saubel’s film “We are still here”.

Texas Troubadour Bill Oliver has been engaging and entertaining audiences from Texas to California bringing to life the vital issues of Habitat conservation for over 20 years. Join us for the fun motivational songs that made him “MR Habitat”!We will provide children arts and crafts throughout the day that pertain to habitats, recycling, and environmental friendly topics.

Give a Day, Get a Day with Riverside County Parks

Beginning January 1, 2010, Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District will become a participating organization in Disney’s “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” Volunteer Service Program.You must sign up with the Helping Hands Network which can be reached through the Disney website to volunteer your services. Then, indicate Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District as the participating organization. After your volunteer service has been completed and verified, Disney will send you a ticket valid for one day admission to a Walt Disney World® or Disneyland® theme park, FREE! The Idyllwild Nature Center has announced their 2010 Event and Program schedule.

Jr Naturalist Programs- Each Saturday 10:00am – 12:00pm. programs include crafts, activities, snacks and a nature walk. Children can earn different gifts depending on numbers of programs they attend throughout the summer. Fee $3.00. Member of Friends support group $2.00. Jr. Naturalist patch is available $3.50 eh. Space is limited, RSVP to guarantee your groups place for these fun activities.

Forest Service Archaeologist Daniel Mccarthy will join us for an informative talk with demonstrations on native usage of acorns. Hands on activities, games, toys that feature the native plants and their usage. Great for kids 7yrs – 14 yrs. Taste the Cahuilla traditional acorn meal wiwish, and acorn muffins.
